Let's settle down

The Settlers of Catan is definitely one of the most thought out and entertaining board games ever. I've been playing it for 10 years now and just cannot imagine a live without it. The game - invented by the German author Klaus Teuber - is being played not only in German-speaking countries but in all of Europe, North- and South-America.
The American console-game developer Jason Fugate from Chicago (Illinois) liked this game so much that he spent his spare time on creating a 1:1 3D adaption of this game for playing in local networks or over the internet. The result was s3dconnector.net. Not only the home of the current version of the game (Sea3D) or the forums, but also the service connecting players to each other. After you downloaded the game it's a breeze to find open games to join on s3dconnector (through an in-game interface).
To support competitive playing s3dconnector has a ladder with an ELO-based ranking system. This will be very familiar for chess players. If you want more details don't miss out the great FAQs on the site.
Last but not least I should mention that currently Sea3D only works in Microsoft Windows environments. Nonetheless a new - platform independent - version called Cities3D is under heavy development.
UPDATE: I just tried Microsofts new Catan - The Computer Game. It is made especially for Microsofts zone.com service. Well, in short: I did not like it at all. Compared to Sea3D it is very colourful, but gameplay is very bad and you don't have this nice community thing you get at s3dconnector.net. So go with the latter ;-)
Go and check it out!
