GIMPshop 2.2.8 for Windows released
Saturday, October 15. 2005
Please note: GIMPshop has not been updated for a long time and probably won't work with current versions of Windows. Just get the regular GIMP. It has evolved far beyond what is being offered in the versions of GIMPshop still circulating. The next release of GIMP (2.8) will even offer an easy setting to switch between GIMP and Photoshop keyboard-shortcuts. GIMPshop has long been deprecated. There is no more reason to use it.
A while ago Scott Moschella released a new version of his GIMP hack called GIMPshop. I didn't have the time to immediately put a windows version out. In fact I was without internet and didn't even notice there was new sourcecode available
The last time I released GIMPshop for Windows there was quite a rush on it and my server suffered alot of traffic. So I won't put it on my server but instead use something like uploadtemple.com until some people hopefully offer some webspace for mirroring the setup file.
The installer includes a recent GTK (which should make GIMPshop work in Win98), the GTK WIMP Windows theme and the GIMP Deweirdifier plugin to make GIMPshop a single window application which usually is more comfortable in windows.
Get it here: gimpshop_2.2.8_fix1_setup.exe (just 7.35 MB)
Mirror 1 (at google)
Mirror 2 (danke Timon!)
The apparently broken version is still here: gimpshop_2.2.8_setup.exe (just 7.35 MB)
Mirror 1 (at plasticbugs.com, thx Scott)
Get the source at plasticbugs.com

Matthias, a few problems when I tried to use your version. Both your shortcuts to the GIMPshop try and run GIMPshop in 'C:\Program Files\GIMPshop' when it should be running it in 'C:\Program Files\GIMPshop\bin'. When it runs in just the GIMPshop folder it says that it cannot find both 'libgimpui-2.0-0.dll' and 'libgimp-2.0-0.dll' and a few components fail to start.
After this occurs anything I attempt to do in GIMPshop like open a picture or create a new one causes it to crash.
The uninstaller also leaves behind a few folders as well as some links in the Start Menu. Thought you might like to know.
I know. uploadtemple somehow doesn't accept anymore files from me and the other service I tried removed the file (maybe because of too many downloads). If you know anything better please tell me. I'm currently trying other services. I hope to get the download back up in a couple of minutes.
It's okey now.
Thank you

Hi Dakira
I'm using winxp sp2.
The GIMPshop 2.2.4 for Windows (The GimpShop for windows 0.1 beta)was working perfecktly.
I uninstalled the 2.2.4 and installed the 2.2.8. With this i can't open my images from disk:C.
After that i uninstalled the 2.2.8 and installed the 2.2.4 and again is working perfectly.
Only with 2.2.8 i have the problem.
GimpShop 2.2.4 worked just fine with the exception of an annoying "stuck" surprise save dialog sometimes, and being unable to save own paramteric brushes. I uninstalled 2.2.4 and installed 2.2.8.
Major: It will always crash when I leave preferences and it died quite a few times doing other operations as well.
Minor: The toolbar can't be resized to a PS-style two column width anymore, and the position of the dock isn't saved.
Using Winxp sp2, and returning to 2.2.4 for now (won't hesitate to try out new versions though).
Thanks alot for your feedback. i'm not sure if this is a problem with the new version of gimpshop in general or just with my windows version. I will look into it. In the mean time I advise you to get the latest deweirdifier (3.0alpha) and put it in your old version of gimpshop since the new version has alot of improvements.
you can get it here:

Hi Dakira
I tried to uninstall the old version GIMPshop0.1beta and installed the new one gimpshop2.2.8. The application just crashes the moment I try to save or cancel my preference settings (Ctrl+K). But it works flawlessly if I do not set any preference and choose individual preference on a new file. It?s a bit weird though.
I?m back to 2.2.4 now
finally a version where the program actually runs!, but whenever i try to create a new page, as soon as the new document appears, the whole 'program has performed an illegal operation' window appears, here is the details:
IMP-2 caused an invalid page fault in

Hi. I'm running XP Pro SP2 w/all the latest patches. I DL'ed and installed gimpshop2.2.8fix1 and everything worked fine until I tried to create a new file, whereupon it crashed. IOW, I'm having the same problem you're having.
I sent the error report and MS reports that their analysis says it's a problem with the GIMP. In the meantime, I have resorted to installing the latest version of WinGIMP as I need to get some work done.
rant
I honestly don't get the GIMP developers. While I'm okay with the fact that they think it's better to open a bazillion windows, I'm not okay with the fact that they don't care about the thousands of users who want just one window. Supposedly open source is all about choice, but the elitist hypocrites who develop the GIMP don't want to give us the ability to choose how many windows it uses because their way is better.
Thank goodness there are projects like PhotoGIMP that give us the GIMP in a more usable setup. You'd think the GIMP developers would take a look at the popularity of this modification and get a clue.
/rant
Anyway, thanks for this project. If there's anything I can do to help fix the new file bug, please let me know. In the meantime I'll live with the "superior" UI in regular GIMP. SIGH
Hi Dakira
The latest deweirdifier (3.0alpha) is not good. I put it in my 2.2.4 version of gimpshop and was imposible to have stable windows (tools). Every time that i open gimpshop, change the toolbars and the position of the docks aren't saved.
I think that the major problem with 2.2.8 is the new deweirdifier if it uses the 3.0alpha.
I put again the old deweirdifier in 2.2.4 and everything is ok.
I have winXP sp2
hey,
I have some time on my hands now and here's what I'm gonna do:
I heard it was a bad idea using cygwin to compile gimp for windows, so I will use mingw now and also get the latest available gtk libraries for the compilation. If this doesn't work I don't know what else to do ;)
As Scott, the original creator of GIMPshop put it: he has "not done the hack right". What I mean: If he had done it right there would be no need to have a seperate GIMPshop package. You could use The GIMP and just use the menu-structure .xml files and choose "Phototoshop_en" as you language. Anyhow, he did not implement the GIMP -> Photoshop 'translations' as a language file but directly put the translations into the source (which is not a good thing to do and the reason why GIMPshop is called a 'hack' instead of i.e. an addon to the GIMP). So if you wanted to translate GIMPshop you'd have to get the source and open all the files containing the english program text and translate them. If I were you I'd wait for Scott to 'do it right' which he told me in an email he will do when he has the time for it.
The new version seems to work much better - thanks! (I'm using WinXP).
Two observations:
1) GIMPshop generates a "memory could not be read" exception when exiting.
2) The help files do not seem to be included in the installation. Was that intentional?
HTH - cheers,
Gregg
You should definately uninstall the old version first. Anyway.. this release seems to have alot of bad issues and I'm still working on a new build environment to recompile it with better versions of gcc and gtk libraries.. so far no success.. but rest assured I'm working on it..
Thank you so much for doing this. I have been waiting for ages for this to happen. Your beta works fine with my window xp sp2 (even without admin rights).
The problem with gimp for windows I had ever since version 2+ was that I can't install the gtk without admin rights, so I was stuck with 1+. Finally someone hacked it so well that I don't need to separately install gtk before gimp 2 works.
once again, can't express my gratitude enough.
We would like to use GimpShop here at our school (50 PCs with GimpShop instead of Photoshop saves us alot of money), but it's not really working on our systems :-(
Some specs:
Windows 2000 (SP4) machines, i'm logged in as administrator. I install GTK+ 2.6.9, Gimp 2.2.9 and after that GimpShop 2.2.8.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5295/gimpshop0en.png
This IS NOT Photoshop. It is GIMPshop. It is supposed to make live easier for Photoshop users trying to use GIMP. Please have a look at the original GIMPshop site (linked in the article) to see what GIMPshop is about, before you post here. You get the Photoshop menu-layout in the menu of new (or open) images - NOT in the GIMP menu.
hi gizz,
You don't need to install GTK and Gimp. You only need GIMPshop. Anyway.. I would not recommend using GIMPshop in a productive environment, yet. At least not the version on my site. I am still working on building a version of GIMPshop (for Windows) which will work in all Windows' and without admin privs. Use GIMP in the meantime or buy cheap Photoshop 6 licenses from ebay.
I have exactly the same problem as gilly (see post #14). I used both the _fix1 and the old version, same for both. It seems to be that the plugins can't be registered properly. After going through all the error messages (160 that is...) gimps starts and the photoshop menu seems to work. but the layout of the toolbars is not right and they can't be hidden/shown with TAB (an important feature for me...) does this work in the "normal" gimpshop version ?
Hi dakira,
i found the reason for the above mentioned error with the iconv.dll: there was another one (in C:\windows) which obviously was used instead of the real one (under ...\Gimpshop\bin) due to the environment PATH variable searching behaviour of windows. After renaming the other one, GIMP starts fine. I have yet to see which program gets angry about the renamed iconv.dll... ;-),googling about it was not very conclusive.
Just wondering what problems installing this will cause if I already have GTK installed? It comes with OpenOffice.org by default and I'm afraid to remove that version and install the version that comes with Gimp because it might mess up OpenOffice.
Can you change the installer in the future so the user can choose not to install GTK?
Ouch. I will get into that asap! This file is directly from me and as I don't have a virus on my computer the only possibility I see, is that someone modified it. Anyway.. gotta go to a concert now.. I'll check this out as soon as I get back. Thanks for the nfo!
I am sorry I took so long to get back to you. I have just downloaded the following 2 files today and no viruses were found on a scan.
gimpshop2.2.8fix1setup.exe
gimpshop2.2.8_setup.exe
I am using CommandAntiVirus. Their parent company goes by the name Authentium. I sent them an e-mail asking if these files were producing a false positive. They never sent me a reply. But anyway, I am no longer getting these files being flagged as having a virus. Either the Antivirus folks fixed their end or you fixed your end.
What is the purpose of the "fix1" file?
George
Hi George,
thx for replying. The files haven't been changed, so I guess it was an error with the anti-virus software you used.
The fix1 corrects an installer bug as mentioned in the very first comment by 'John'. I only left the old installer there as I wasn't sure if it works for everyone. I think I can remove the old installer now, though.
Halo,
I'm new to the Gimpshop 2.2.8 for WIN program. i have installed and run succesfully the 2.2.8 version. I have Win98 OS. I have noticed that the program lack the CMYK mode, how can I solv this?
Another problem is that it doen't open files with eps extension (those files was created by Photoshop and also can not open files with the pdf extension.
can anybody help me with this problems?
thnx and keep dooing good job
I installed it and ran the app to get the photoshop shortcuts, but I have none of the usual options running along the top of the screen... i.e. under the file tab at the top of the screen I only have the option exit... no open file option even available. I remved the program and reinstalled and get the same thing.
Hi. I've never used GIMP or GIMPshop before, though I have used PhotoShop in the past. I just installed GIMPshop 2.8.8 on my computer.
It seems like most of the features are missing or disabled. How do I get things like the Filters or brush opacity to work? Do I have to download and install those separately? I would appreciate any information. Thanks.
I would like to say a big thank you for this one...like most I am familiar with Photoshop and this tool makes life a whole load easier.
I too have experienced problems when trying to create a new image.
A workaround for this one is to open any image on your computer first...then the next time you go to open a brand new image the program should not crash.
I have GIMP 2.2.8 GTK 2.8.9 and GIMPSHOP 2.2.8fix1.
Is there a plan to change the images and all of the shortcut keys at all? I noticed that some of the shortcut keys in GIMP r similar to those found in photoshop...e.g. select all, rectangular marquee. It would be nice to see all of them the same do you not think guys?
probably you ARE missing something. Please read this article completely and don't just download the software. If you had read it you knew that I am not the creator of GIMPshop. That is Scott Moschella at plasticbugs.com. Have a look at his site for details about GIMPshop and the changes he did.
Hi there,
Nice work.
One idea, why not give your GIMPShop for Windows builds their own STATIC url?. That way we could find always the latest builds without having to check your blog and search inside it.
Well, just an idea. You could simply create a Gimpshop-win.sourceforge.net project and use the sourceforge infrastructure.
Whatd´ya think?
Best
fernando
Hi, thanks for the input. I was going to set something like that up anyway. I'm too busy atm. A sourceforge project wouldn't be good. There are no real source modifications. There is already the GIMP source, which is only patched. And just for distributing files it would be a waste to create a sf.net project. I guess I'll set up a subdomain or an own domain.
I'm moving servers anyway these days, so that's be a good time to set something up.
Cheers
dakira
A subdomain on your own domain is OK, but a sourceforge project is better. Why? Simply because EVEN if someday your domain goes down, a sourceforge.net project will keep running "forever".
I used to think like you, that hosting everything on my own domain was better. Now I keep my email on Gmail, my blog on blogger.com. WHY? Well, it's simply much less work for me, and someone else is taking care of the infrastructure of keeping my email/blog/etc functioning.
THink about it. Even if no source code is involved, by uploading your binaries to sourceforge.net you're immediatelly making such files available on all SF mirrors worldwide, contributing to faster downloads to people all around the World.
FC
Hi,
I'm not hosting any files on my domain because I couldn't afford the traffic ;)
Regarding sf.net: A project like that is against sf.net policies and would be removed if discovered by their admins. And it would also be a waste of time since this is what's going to happen:
The GIMP to Photoshop "translations" are going to be supplied in seperate language files. Right now they are "hacked" directly into the source code. This way GIMPshop will be translatable to other languages and won't stay english-only. The only thing remaining is the xml-files for the menu structure, which are already there and not bound to the source.
So what you are most likely going to see is a sf.net projekt having the xml and language files and precompiled binaries using the current GIMP source for mac, win and linux. This is the only way I see to approach this and it is just a matter of (Scotts) time to get it accomplished. If it is done this way it would only be a matter of compile-time to put out a new GIMPshop for all platforms every time a new GIMP gets released.
There are already several projects hosting the "GIMPshop source", which is just stupid because its just a modified copy of the GIMP source and would have to be changed by hand for every new GIMP release.
So what is there to do:
- wait until Scott incorporates his changes into seperate language files (IIRC he promised to do that as soon as he's got more time on his hands)
- create automated build scripts for all platforms (we could even make use of sf.net's cross-plattform compilefarms for the releases then, too bad there's no intel-mac compile farm yet)
- host the stuff on sf.net
- merely push the button on every new GIMP release that comes around
Every other approach (in my opinion) would just be as inefficient as the way scott hacked GIMP in the first place.
Since all people involved in GIMPshop (99% Scott) have a very limited amount of spare time, this will take some time but sooner or later it IS gonna happen this way.
Cheers
dakira
Too Many Windows
When I open a file, the "open" window goes away. But if I switch over to, say, Firefox and then switch back to GIMPshop the "open" window is filled with grey but on top of all my other windows. I can't close it, either by clicking the "x" in the upper right or by right clicking and selecting "close."
In the "Window" menu on the main background program menu, all of the dialog boxes that have popped up for the session are listed, including "open," in addition to my toolbars and main image window.
Am I doing something wrong? How can I make these go away?
Thanks!
Hm, i think that software is very cool, but it dont works on my WinXP Prof SP2, when i start, a window appears: "Unable to open a test swap File. To avoid data loss please check the location and the permissions of the swap directory defined in your preferences (currently"${gimp_dir}"). "
That's my problem so far...
And I'm waiting for the 2.2.10 Release - do you think it's comming next Week or so on?
so far...
GimpShop neither works for me: It is unable to create a directory under documents and settings and my personal folder. I guess it's an issue with special charachters in the filename " .gimp2_2'" that Windows doesn't allow. I have administrator rights when I run the installation. Any suggestions to what I shall do to so things work nice and easy?
Heya,
I installed this newer version of GIMPshop on my laptop and it works perfectly, but I installed it on my desktop and whenever i try to create a new canvas, I get a Microsoft Error message telling me Windows has encountered an error and must close.
any ideas?
I've got GIMPshop 2.28fix1_ on a Notebook (WinXP Home SP2). I get the same error on creating a new canvas. You can work around this by first opening any random image and creating a new canvas only after that. Then you can close the opened image. Also when opening an image, an empty "open image" window will constantly be in the background.
cheers, g0d0
Btw, anyone knows about how to compile the latest sources in a Dev-Cpp project?
I'm using WinXP sp2. The GIMPshop 2.2.4 for Windows (The GimpShop for windows 0.1 beta) won't open correctly when the icon is clicked. I get a red X message saying: "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive". After clicking "continue" several times, the program will open but the message pops up again. After clicking "continue" several more times the program opens.
Question 1: Is there something wrong with my PC or is it a problem within the program causing this to happen?
Question 2: Where is the help file?
I can't figure out out to use the program. I've never used PhotoShop so I'm really new to this. I don't usually have this much trouble figuring out how to use programs but now, I really feel dumb.
I seem to be having the same issue as quite a few people; GIMPShop 2.2.8fix1 crashes when I try to create a new canvas (I can open files fine). I've tried the work around of opening a file THEN creating a new canvas but it still crashes; any ideas?
Using Windows XP SP2
PS I'm not too sure about what I need to install; just the GIMPShop2.2.8_fix1 or do I need the GTK+ too?
Installed 2.2.8_fix1 on a Win2K sp4 laptop, and so far so good: works great, very cool! However, it seems that no help files were installed. Can anyone address this problem? I did see a couple of earlier posts that mention the same absence of help files, but replies to those posts didn't address this problem.
Why nobody answers these questions about help files? I have the same prob. When i try to open the help files by pressing F1 or open them any other way, it pops up this message:
GIMP Message
help.exe Message
Could not open 'C:\Program Files\GIMPshop\share\gimp\2.0\help\en\gimp-help.xml' for reading: No such file or directory
Please check your installation.
Does anybody know anything about this or are u guyz just lazy?? :D
Id be happy to know how to solve this...
Hi.. I am not lazy, I just have no time for this thing and I'm kind of stuck compiling the latest GIMPshop for Windows. In the new version I planned to include helpfiles (from the GIMP for win project).. but I just can't get it compiled..
If you want helpfiles just go to the gimp for win page and download them (they are available as a seperate download)
I have GIMPshop 2.2.8 for Windows installed and went to the Gimp for Win page and downloaded the GIMP-help-2-0.11-setup and tried to install. The result yielded the following message "Gimp 2.0 installation could not be read from the Registry. Please install Gimp 2.0.0 or later first." Trouble is I can't find Gimp 2.0.0 to follow the instructions. Any suggestions??? Also, anyone know if GIMPshop can use Photoshop plugins and, if so, how to install them. I'm trying to install an "eliminate white" file which has a Photoshop 8bf extension.
Just tried the new fix1 version of 2.28 and, I'm not sure if this has been reported yet but it seems a bit odd...
I couldn't close the program. Clicking either the 'Close' button or 'Exit' in the menu did nothing. Tried several times, and nothing happened. No messages. No sounds. Nothing. Eventually I had to kill the process to quit.
So yeah,...that's my experience with GIMPshop. Fun stuff.
Maybe there's a fix. Maybe it's a bug. But there's definitely something wrong. It was a fresh install. No previous version installed before it. Everything installed smoothly, opened quickly but the exit was less than spectacular.
Most likely never. Whatever your reasons for using Vista (this early) are: I don't know a single developer who is willing to upgrade from XP to Vista, so I have no possibility to test it there. I am currently not working on GIMPshop, but what you might hope for is that the next version will just run there. Sorry pal.
I just downloaded and installed GimpShop2.2.8-fix on Windows XP. When I open an image, it opens. However, upon creating a new image with File..New, it crashes immediately after opening the new image window.
If there is a solution (I notice this issue has been around since 2005 on these comments), I'd love to hear of it.
I appreciate the program, as I'd love to be able to follow along with Photoshop tutorials on the web without having to use a costly program.

Works okay, But there is no default cursor (the arrow type) - I assume becuz this is a beta. Defintely needs one though so as to move layers around more easily etc.
This as far as I have got. I use Photoshop 5 ('cuz I only do basic web work) and it would be nice that when a paste is done, it arrived in a new layer (rather than having to create the layer first). This is a more efficient method in the middle of a large and already time consuming project.
I haven't tried importing files yet. The main one needed is the importation of .EPS files from Illustrator or Freehand. Photoshop gives options of scalability and a transparent background when importing EPS's. This is a crucial item, used often, in the design process and would give your software a real edge, as no other "similar to Photoshop" program can do this (that I've found) -- that oughta keep you busy for a month or two :-).
I use mainly Windows, but have recently installed Ubuntu on a secondary drive (pity it wouldn't go on a flash stick) on my IBM T41 laptop. I only have Linux in case a client has it so I can translate their files to text and move them to Windows, so will not be seeing how it works on Linux.
I will continue to play around with this. I did try the original GIMP, took one look, laughed hilariouly and uninstalled it. This is better, well done.
Hi..
thx for the review. You should note, though.. that this will not be updated too soon. I'm not the original author (as stated in the article). I just compiled and packaged this for Windows. The 2.4 release of GIMP is very promising and all the work done at the UI-front will make GIMPshop obsolete.
GIMPshop is just some kind of a hack and not a real program on its own. Scott (the original author) just replaced the strings in the source to rename functions to their Photoshop equivalent and changed the XML-files with the menu structures.. thats it.
It is a hack because the right way would have been to create a language file (and not hack the source directly).. that would make carrying GIMPshop to new releases of GIMP much easier. I don't have the time to do this and appears the interest in GIMPshop is not big enough to get other people doing it "right".
Anyway.. I think you should not be using Win98 at all (for security reasons) but if you must.. check out the GIMP support pages on running GIMP in Win98.. Almost everything you can read there applies to GIMPshop as well..
finally got it to work with VISTA.
Just install Gimp 2.6.1. Copy the files libglib-2.0-0.dll, libgmodule-2.0-0.dll and libgobject-2.0-0.dll from the bin folder into a new folder.
Then uninstall your Gimp 2.6.1.
Next, install Gimpshop and copy the 3 files to the gimpshop/bin folder.
Using Windows Vista, I installed gimpshop 2.2.8.
The move tool seems to come on when I use the select tool, either from the toolbar or the menu, so I can't select anything, only move it.
This happened after I selected an image using the rectangular select and cropped it. Thereafter, all select tools appear as the move tool.
please please help me i do not know wat 2 do. every time it tells me that i need 2 be an administrator..... it is getting on my nerves please tell me. the websites it didn't work 4 me my pc is windows xp. please help me guys. and can u please put them on steps so i can get it. thnx guys.

Acaba de salir a la calle la nueva versión del programade retoque fotográfico y multiplataforma The GIMP, el cual arregla una serie de fallos que arrastraba desde que iniciaron la serie 2.2.
