I just saw a gameplay demo of Spore, the next big hit being produced by Maxis and published by EA. I haven't been a big gamer for years but this looks really promising. Basically they wrap up all game concepts you ever heard of in one huge game (except maybe car racing and kung fu). The video is a cut-out of a presentation held at the Game Developers Conference 2006. See the links below for a link the the whole presentation and a nice flash presentation of Spore.

OMG! How many times UM does he UM say UM UM?
That's Soooooo Irritating!
Aside from that I can't wait for the game. :)
man i cant wait for this game. its gonna be epic
This looks like a really cool game. When can I get it?
The release date is frustrating - it keeps moving, and never comes closer, only further away :(
First it was going to be November this year, then it was December/January, then February, I have heard from one place that it could be as far off as June/July next year but around about Feb/March seems most likely.
eaplay.com should have the relevant info
Yeah I know. But gibe them some time. This is going to be THE game. In prior games - when the lead developer was pushed - it was always bad for the game.
He should have as long as he needs. That worked out pretty good for The SIMS
yeah.. I know that its bad to rush the development but I want some Spore-y goodness now! (yay impatience!)
if they just released the creature editor now so you could make some freakish animals I'd be happy, and theyd have some extra content generated to include in the game at the start
lol .. yeah.. releasing the creature editor would be a great idea. I think I'd be a great promotion, too.
Imagine, they put out the creature editor for free and everyone's gonna buy the game to see their creatures in action.
Thing is, any creature you made, you wouldnt be able to automatically have when you play - youd need to evolve it again - and if it had been put into the game as pre-made content then it wouldnt be cool to have it any more.
But as a promo for the game, itd be awesome, and it would satisfy my Spore cravings for a while
You're right, I remember. I'd love that as a promo, too. Maybe someone should tell them about this idea.
BTW: If I might ask, how did you find my (rarely updated) blog?
via StumbleUpon (Firefox extension)
hehe.. stumbleupon is great, you find all kinds of stuff you'd never have thought to go looking for
dude i found this page through stumble upon too, so everybody get FIREFOX, the best browser
yeah me too.. nice thing that
Nice.. I'm gonna check out StumbleUpon.. I'm an Opera user, though ;-) They say Opera doesn't work because StumbleUpon relies on features Opera doesn't have. That is obviously not true.. hmm.. makes me wonder...
Opera?... as in, not Firefox?
ah well, at least your not using Internet Explorer :)
Exactly :-) I'm using it for many years now. There are just some killerfeatures I wouldn't want to miss:
- speed, I'm on an old 800Mhz PC, Firefox is just soo slow.. especially when you have like 30 tabs open
- session management, available firefox extensions are just not comparable. I need what Opera has especially for research on the net
Well.. and alot more.. but these two are the most important for me..
fair enough, whatever works best for you
but i love my firefox :D
so many extensions that have managed to make themselves a part of my internet-related life...
e.g. Gotta love adblock, it removes the majority of adverts and if it misses one I can easily choose to block it (or just if a page takes a while to load because of all the extra stuff loading)
and Download Embedded, I love this thing, any file embedded into a webpage (flash movies/games, stuff from online video sites, all that stuff) can now be easily grabbed onto my hard drive
McAfee site advisor is a great security thing, their people trolled through a significant portion of the internet testing downloads for viruses, email signup forms to see if you get spammed, checking for excessive popups, browser exploits, everything! and i get a handy little button that goes green if its all Ok, red if its a bad site, and yellow if its dubious (or white if its untested)
Forecastfox means i can see the weather over the next few days, I have a download manager and ftp built into the browser, Session manager (although maybe not as good as the opera ones you mentioned) means i can re-open closed tabs and resume browsing where i left off each time i load firefox
in short (looking back.. maybe not so short) I'm an extension junky :D
I know.. I like FF, too. But it's a memory hog and too slow on my comp.. FF 2.0 solved alot of issues, though.
I have to say for it is the session management. I mean Opera even saves which part of the site you were srolled down to.. and all the back-history of every single tab.. that's especially useful if you do research on a specific topic.. you can start right off, where you left. I use sessions like bookmarks ;-)
Oh.. and for AdBlocking I use StyleSheets which is a really nice and effective way.
Effectively Opera is the only thing I have running all the time. It is my (RSS) Feedreader, my email client and my IRC client.. oh yeah.. and you can use it for browsing, too ;-)
Well.. you see I'm kind of an Opera evangelist g. You should give it a try ;)
is it free and downloadable?
if the answer is yes then i might give it a go :)
or.. i might not, i have a lot of web-surfing to catch up on (hehe.. that almost managed to sound like something important)
yep.. it is free and works in any OS you can imagine ;-)

I liked firefox, but I couldn't stand the fact that flash, in it, ran slowly on my computer. Compounded with the fact that the only extension I like was StumbleUpon, and there is now an IE version, I just went back to IE. Except in version 7, with tabs.
Wouldn't spore be even cooler if the civilization stage was like the game Civilization, tribal stage was like The Sims, and you could genetically engineer a slave species? And they somehow tied in racing and kung-fu, as mini-games maybe? And during wars, you could strategically command and be in battles as an FPS? And play competievly over the internet? That last one is the best, I think. It would be awesome to play MMOSpore.
the reson ff is good is because it has tabs something opera has too but ff is the best cause of the extentions. yay felow stumblers the #1 cause of insomnia!!!
I forgot to say something. It is goddamn amazing that the world is procedurally generated. That is AMAZING.
I think some way of playing against people would be pretty great. Its not part of the main game because whoever got their first and took over a significant amount of the galaxy would have a massive advantage and could (if they wanted) just drop a nuke on every new player while they were still in the creature phase
Maybe some kind of optional thing, where once you get to the space-age part you can choose to hookup to a different server and play as part of a competitive group. You could get interplanetary federations and alliances forming like the guilds in mmorpgs. I wouldnt go for that personally, not my kind of thing, but it would appeal to a lot of people
Or just a one-off battle which doesnt affect your game if you lose. You and a friend (or a group of people) get put in a temporary solar system together and battle it out to see who's species kicks the most ass
I'm really just looking forward to making insane creatures. Hopefully when you get to the galactic level you can go back and just make a freaky creature and release it into the wild without having to build it up from the cellular level.
hehe.. if it works that way then the first time i play through I'll be all serious about the creature design and try and make it properly. After that when I can just fiddle with stuff I'll be making some really weird stuff. I want to see how strange you can make these things and still have them able to survive (e.g. massive body + tiny legs, or an animal with a centre of gravity that makes it impossible for them to stand)
Damn this'll be one heck of a game (if it ever gets released that is)
I'm pretty sure they won't add multiplayer-features because that is exactly, what they don't want. Not everything has to be multiplayer, IMHO. This game will be fun as it is.
Without a doubt, the game will be awesome as is
But it would still be kinda fun to have a way of playing against someone for a one-off thing
hehe.. if you had a multiplayer game and started it from the cellular level it could take a looooong while before youre able to compete with each other
(unless your both in the same tide pool.. could give an interesting dimension to the game - evolving geared towards beating your friend rather than being good for the environment)
oh, one other thing - if I choose "subscribe to entry" does that carry on until I unsubscribe or do I have to select that each time I post a message?
no clue. I'm gonna ask the main developer of my blog software tomorrow.
Okay.. I got the reply. Subscriptions carry on until you unsubscribe. Thinking about it.. it makes sense ;)
Umm, a few too many!
hehe.. yeah, it does kinda make sense
but there are so many illogical things in the world that using common sense like that doesnt always get you the right answer
in other news: I want SPORE!!
stupid release date that isnt today... grumblegrumblegrumble
hmm.. turns out my reading skills arent enough to pass the anti-spam test :)
This game looks cool. I cant wait to Bearshare it onto my hard-drive =X
Bearshare? aww c'mon, I'm not pro-copyright by any standard but with a game this cool I think its better to support the people who made it and show that its a good game idea by buying a proper copy
Still, if it turns out to be really expensive then I can see the point in getting it by "alternative" methods
lol, yea....i will try to buy it...=X
IE 7 can use stumbleupon and has tabs too.
Just telling you. Spore looks awesome I want to make a mermaid kinda thing like an anphibian or whatever.
Thx for the hint. I'm not using windows anymore, though. So IE7 is no option for me (and wouldn't be if I still used windows). I'll reinstall XP when Spore's out, if I can't get Spore to run in Linux.
I think the spore release date will keep changing.
Yeah.. but this is one game, where I say "let them take their time". Wright is one of the last original game developers.. one just shouldn't push these guys.. I wonder if Peter Molyneux is still in business.. well
If enough people go to the amazon.com page for spore and participate in the discussion entitled "Linux?" then EA may notice.
got a link?
