Powerusing del.icio.us with Opera

UPDATE: the current version of direc.tor doesn't seem to work with delicious.com. I contacted the author to see if he's going to fix it. If not I might try to fix it myself. Stay tuned.

the GUI
If you love using del.icio.us as I do and are also an Opera user you've got one problem: there is no cool plugin, as there is for Firefox. This is where the very cool del.icio.us direc.tor Web2.0 GUI comes in. Check out the static demo (demo only works in IE or Firefox) to see how it works.

In this article I will show you how to seamlessly integrate this with Opera. You will never ever want to miss this again ;)

You will need to download a User JavaScript and place it somewhere in a seperate directory in your Opera profile dir. In Windows open (Start->Run) %AppData%\Opera, in Linux open $HOME/.opera. Call the directory direc.tor for example. Now download direc.tor_script.js and save it to this directory (right-click to save).

This JavaScript has to be applied to a specific site - namely https://api.del.icio.us - to work. So head over there, right-click on the site and chose Edit site preferences. Go to the Scripting-tab and under User JavaScript files chose the directory where you just saved the Javascript file to and apply the settings.

You are almost done. For security reasons Opera doesn't allow the execution of User javaScript on secured sites (https). In our case we want that, so we tell Opera to allow it explicitly for https://api.del.icio.us. Close the Opera browser and open this file: override.ini. It is in your Opera profile dir (see above). You will see there already is a section [api.del.icio.us]. To this section you now have to append this line:

User Prefs|User JavaScript on HTTPS=1

Now save the file and open Opera again. To see if it worked head over to https://api.del.icio.us. You should get two messages. The first asking you if you want to allow User JavaScript on this site (say Yes). The second will ask you for your del.icio.us credentials. DO NOT tick the checkbox where you can save the password. I don't know why, but this will break the whole thing. Anyway, now you should see your bookmarks organized on this wonderful GUI ;)

Now you can either bookmark the API site, or (for convenience) create a button for it. I've made one for you. Just click it and move it anywhere you want it inside Opera: del.icio.us direc.tor.

I hope you like this. If you also want a button for posting to del.icio.us see Cool Buttons for Opera.

Cheers,
Matthias

Can you make it work for 9.5?

#3.1 dakira on 10/27/07 at 04:29 AM [Reply]

I will, when 9.5 is released, which will soon I think. I don't like Opera Betas (or even Alphas) as they are always pretty buggy and I need my browser to work ;)

how do we get this to work on a mac?

#5.1 dakira on 07/10/08 at 08:45 PM [Reply]

Instructions should be exactly the same, except you need to figure out where your Opera profile-dir on your Mac is. Enter opera:about in the addressbar to get that info.

    Thankyou for this!

Unfortunately I have followed all your steps and when I go to https://api.del.icio.us I get the first dialog box popping up about running Javascript files but no second dialog box asking for my user name and password. The page loads and says
"Loading your del.icio.us bookmarks...." and then that message vanishes but I am left with empty tables and no bookmarks. I'm using Opera 9.63 and would really appreciate any help getting this going because it's such a great tool.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Oman,

the article is outdated and I haven't used direc.tor for a while (since the original delicious interface improved). I'll try to update it as soon as I find the time.. just subscribe to the comments here and you'll know when it's done..

Okay.. I just figured out, that direc.tor is not compatible with the new delicious.com anymore. Just contacted the author to let him figure out what's wrong.

I too hope this can be made to work again in Opera.

I didn't receive a reply from the author, yet. We can probably forget this nice tool.
